 The history of the shrine

In the document submitted to the government in Meiji 18 (1885) as “Mitake-jinja”, the origin of the shrine is described as; “the deity was invited to the suburban estate of the village during Eiroku era (1558-70) and was moved to the established shrine at Ryugadani with donation by Nagasaki Shirozaemon Yoshikuni”.

Also, the pillar label preserved at the shrine says that Nagasaki Shirozaemon Yoshimitsu and Matashiro Yoshikane donated worshippers hall wishing prosperity of their descendants.

In Meiji 41 (1908), small shrines in the village were merged with this shrine and on 1st April of the same year, the name of the shrine was changed from Mitake-Jinja to Tamagawa-Jinja according to the name of the region.

The shrine building was rebuilt in Taisho 3 (1914). It was suffered from the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and repaired in Taisho 12 (1923).

In September Showa 41 (1966), the region was attacked by a strong typhoon, and 700-year-old Japanese red pine trees aged which were nominated as natural monument of Tokyo were suffered. On this occasion, rebuilding project of both the main building and the worshipper’s hall was started, and it was completed in November Showa 43 (1968).
